RIP Steve Jobs
“No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you...

Tumblr Raises $85 Million
Blogging service Tumblr said it has raised $85 million, although the company has barely any revenue and the business plan is sketchy at best. But it was the lack of revenue part that kept some major venture firms away from making the dea.  Graylock Partners, investors with Facebook and Groupon, and Twitter-investor Insight Ventre Partners. Speaking of sketchy business plans… Who else is...

How Steve Jobs Ruined Comics
Before the iPhone, “This image would clearly be understood without the voice balloon, or the character’s open mouth,” says cartoonist Tom Pappalardo, who jokes that Steve Jobs ruined comics. Check out the whole gallery of images here.

10 Things You Didn’t Know About Witness Protection
Cool article from the ridiculously named BestOnlineColleges. I’m not sure how the blog ended up on a scam college website but there it is. This is certainly a trap. The witness protection program is frequently used as a plot device in movies and on TV shows, but many people don’t know much about the system in reality. In the U.S., witness security has protected 7,500 witnesses and...

Netflix Plan to Lure Back Subscribers: Confuse...
Listen closely: From now on, that Criterion Edition Seven Samurai gathering dust on your coffee table for the past three months will need to be sent back to Qwikster, not Netflix. Qwikster is in charge of all your DVD-by-mail needs. Netflix will continue to be your trusted name in streaming of hundreds of TV shows and terrible movies you didn’t know existed, plus the occasional decent...

Sept. 8, 1966: Liftoff for the Starship Enterprise
1966: Star Trek makes its network television debut. Given the cultural impact and enormous franchise spawned by the original Star Trek series, it’s hard to believe that the show lasted just three seasons and was canceled by NBC in 1969 because of low ratings. Read on here.

First Photo Possibly Taken With iPhone 5 Surfaces
This isn’t just any photo of a plate of sushi. This very photo is said to have been shot with an iPhone 4, but its EXIF data says otherwise. According to the data, it was shot with an 8-megapixel camera, as it originally had a resolution of 3264 x 2448 before being cropped to a 5.12-megapixel size of 2235 x 2291. It’s also fishy that the photo was taken at 4.3mm f/2.4, which is decidedly more...

Want to Live Cheaply? Head to Texas
In Texas, it’s not all oil wells and rodeos. Despite this state’s great wealth and culture, plenty of folks are living a hardscrabble existence. Harlingen, a developing city in the heart of the Rio Grande Valley, has one of the lowest income levels in the U.S. Fortunately for residents of this hot, dry city in the state’s southern tip, it is also the cheapest place in the country...

iPhone 5 Prototype is Deja Vu All Over Again
We’ve seen this happen before. An iPhone test device goes missing on the eve of its expected launch, the media drums up the drama, and everybody’s talking about Apple’s next big thing. A year ago, an iPhone 4 prototype was lost in a bar in Redwood City, Calif. and subsequently wound up in the hands of tech blog Gizmodo, which paid $5,000 for the device. Two men have been...
